Hanna Instruments Checker Phosphorus Ultra Low Range ColorimeterInformation

Hanna Checker HI736 - Phosphorus Ultra Low Range Checker

he Hanna Checker® bridges the gap between simple chemical test kits and professional instrumentation. Chemical test kits are not very accurate and only give 5 to 10 points resolution while professional instrumentation can cost hundreds of dollars and can be time consuming to calibrate and maintain. The Checker® is both accurate and affordable.

The HI736 Phosphorus ULR Checker® portable handheld colorimeter features a resolution of 1 ppb and ±5 ppb ±5% of reading accuracy and uses an adaptation of Standard Method Ascorbic Acid.

The HI736 Checker® is extremely simple to use. First, zero the instrument with your water sample. Next, add the reagents. Last, place the vial into the Checker®, press the button and read the results. It’s that easy.

How it works:

  • The Hanna Marine Ultra Low Phosphorus Checker® HC HI736 is designed to make testing quick and easy.

  • Press the button to power the meter on. Notice “Add C1” appears on the screen. You are now ready to begin testing.
  • Fill the cuvette to the 10mL line with sample and fasten the cap.
  • Using a microfiber cloth, wipe the cuvette to remove any oils or fingerprints from the glass. Then, place the cuvette into the checker and close the lid, making sure it is completely closed. It is important to make sure that the lid is completely closed for an accurate reading.
  • Press the button. Once the screen shows Add C2, remove the cuvette from the meter and add one packet of HI736-25 reagent.
  • Fasten the cap, and shake gently for 2 minutes until the powder is completely dissolved. Then wipe the cuvette of any oils and fingerprints, and place back into the meter.
  • Press and hold the button until the timer is displayed on the screen. The 3-minute countdown will begin. Once the timer reaches zero, the meter will directly display the concentration of phosphorus in ppb.

The Benefit of Testing for Phosphorus

Phosphorus is an essential element for all life forms. While phosphorus is vital for growth in plants and animals, it can be problematic for aquaria inhabitants, especially for coral, where excess phosphorus can even prevent calcification of coral from occurring. The main source of phosphorus in reef aquaria is through food. Phosphorus is an important part of any fish food, but much care is taken by reefers to avoid overfeeding.
